The region of South-Holland South consists of theHoeksche Waardfrom Zuid-Beijerland to 's Gravendeel to the south of Rotterdam and theDrechtstedenregion withDordrechtas the centre. It also extends to theAlblasserwaardandVijfheerenlandenfrom Papendrecht to Vianen, enclosed by the Lek river to the north and the Merwede river to the south.

Several important motorways run through Zuid-Holland Zuid: theE 19,the international motorway via Antwerp and Breda to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, passes Dordrecht; theE 311connects the Alblasserwaard with Vianen and Utrecht, and theE 31runs through the Alblasserwaard past towns which include Alblasserdam and Sliedrecht. Bridges, tunnels and secondary roads ensure good link-ups with the entire area. There are numerous car ferries and foot-passenger ferries for a quick river crossing. Dordrecht has a very frequent train connection to Rotterdam, Schiphol, Amsterdam and Antwerp. The stations Sliedrecht, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Dordrecht and Leerdam are on the Dordrecht-Geldermalsen line.
